Leap Day: Why not a National holiday?

by Kyle 29. February 2008 17:08

As the alarm was going off at 5:45a this morning I had to ask myself this question. "Why isn't today a national holiday?"  Granted, I just really wanted to go back to sleep for another hour or two and it really was just a rhetorical question.  But the more that I think about it today the more it is starting become an actual question that I want an answer to.

Each year we have an extra 6 hours so every fourth year we accumulate those and have an extra day.  Why do we have to spend that extra day at work?  Don't get me wrong, I really do like my job, but I think we should get this extra day to do the things that need to be done that aren't getting done because we are always at work.  Besides, it's not like anything that I accomplished today really made that big of a difference in the grand scheme of mankind. I'll bet you didn't either, did you?

What would I do with this extra day?  I'd sleep in, make breakfast with my girlfriend, and spend the day doing "honey do's" around the house with her.  I'd be getting things ready around there  for my kids to come spend the weekend with me.  Today I would have actually worked on getting my budget done so I can figure out where my money keeps disappearing to.  I could have accomplished a lot today.  Most of all I could have enjoyed a day that I haven't had since 2004.

Oh well, back to work I guess...
